Hate crimes are still far too real against the LGBTQ community. The trans community faces the highest rates of hate crimes including murder. While federal law protects gender identity under the federal hate crimes law, Iowa misses the mark by not having gender identity protected under the state’s hate crimes legislation.
By adding gender identity to the state’s hate crimes law, Iowa will send a message loud and clear that trans Iowans deserve protection and dignity like anyone else. Law enforcement agencies in Iowa would be empowered to investigate incidents against trans Iowans and ensure that hate crimes are prosecuted.
