Statement on Bullying, Harassment and Discrimination

All students deserve a safe, supportive environment in which all students can learn, including students that are gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgendered (GLBT) or perceived to be. The mission of the GLBT Youth in Iowa Schools Task Force is to increase understanding in local school districts and communities about GLBT students and to improve school climate in order to increase the personal safety and achievement levels of GLBT students.

The GLBT Youth in Iowa Schools Task Force recommends that the state legislature enact the following anti-harassment and non-discrimination policy for all school districts in Iowa:

Bullying, harassment and discrimination will not be tolerated based on any real or perceived characteristic, including, but not limited to, age, color, creed, national origin, race, religion, marital status, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, physical attributes, physical or mental disability, ancestry, socioeconomic status or familial status.

Until the State Legislature enacts such an anti-harassment and non-discrimination policy, the GLBT Youth in Iowa Schools Task Force recommends that individual school boards enact such policies to protect all students from bullying, harassment and discrimination in their schools.
