Iowa Safe Schools urges Congressman Jim Nussle
to pledge his support for an anti-bullying bill
that would protect all students in Iowa schools.
In a gubernatorial debate yesterday (October 2,
2006) sponsored by KCRG-TV and the Cedar Rapids
Gazette, Congressman Nussle said, “Bullying,
assault on any student, is abhorrent and ought
to be outlawed.” However, Congressman Nussle
does not support the anti-bullying legislation
that would protect all students from bullying
and harassment. The legislation recently
received bi-partisan support from Senate Leaders
Mike Gronstal (D- Council Bluffs) and Mary
Lundby (R- Marion).
“We agree that bullying ought to be outlawed,
but we are confused why Congressman Nussle does
not support bi-partisan legislation to protect
all students—black, white, brown, straight, gay,
fat, skinny, tall, short, male, female, poor or
rich,” said Brad Clark, Executive Director of
Iowa Safe Schools. “We urge Congressman Nussle
to pledge his support for this legislation to
protect all kids in Iowa schools.”
In addition to support from legislative
leadership, the legislation has support from
Iowa Conference of the United Methodist Church,
Iowa Parent-Teacher Association, League of Women
Voters, Iowa State Education Association, School
Administrators of Iowa, Iowa Civil Rights
Commission, Interfaith Alliance of Iowa, and
several other statewide organizations.
