Overview:
Iowa Safe Schools (GLBT Youth
in Iowa Schools Task Force) was established by the Iowa Civil Rights
Commission in 2002 to help create safer schools for gay, lesbian,
bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) students.
Its
mission
is to
increase
understanding in local school districts and communities about GLBT
students; increase awareness and address the inequities regarding safety
of GLBT students in Iowa schools; and improve school climate in order to
increase the personal safety and achievement levels of GLBT students.
The Task Force consists of individuals from the Iowa
Department of Education, School Administrators of Iowa, Iowa School
Board Association, Iowa State Education Association, Iowa Civil Rights
Commission, and the GLBT and civil rights community.
The Education and Outreach
Specialist will help implement the statewide Safe Schools Policy passed
by the Iowa Legislature in February 2007.
The law requires every Iowa school to
develop anti-bullying/anti-harassment policies, protecting all students
from bullying and harassment, including but not limited to real or
perceived race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity,
disability, socioeconomic status, and other characteristics, and
requires accountability on reporting bullying/harassment statistics and
encourages bullying prevention plans.
Responsibilities:

Conduct staff trainings and professional
development for local school districts, education associations, and
other groups as requested.
·
Work with education
associations and civil rights groups to develop comprehensive, anti-bias
training and resources for school district employees on bullying and
harassment.
·
Raise awareness of
safety and well-being of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender
students through public forums, educator institutes, and other events.
·
Organize and
implement the annual Governor’s Conference on LGBT Youth
·
Cultivate
partnerships with like-minded individuals and groups to provide
professional development to additional sectors of communities, including
healthcare, business, social work, and faith communities.

Assist in existing
and ongoing work of Iowa Safe Schools and support the Executive Director
in implementing programs when needed.

Maintain and update
printed materials/resources and help maintain website resources.
·
Other duties as
assigned
Qualifications:
·
A Bachelor's degree
(Education-related degree is desirable)
·
Excellent oral and
written skills
·
Be organized,
detail-oriented and able to meet deadlines
·
Manage multiple
projects and deadlines
·
Proficiency in
Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Outlook
·
Ability to establish and
maintain excellent working relationships and work collaboratively with
the Task Force,
like-minded organizations, volunteers, media and public.
·
Willingness to
travel (approximately 10 days per month)
·
Support of civil
rights for GLBT persons and their full participation in society with
full rights and responsibilities of citizenship
Compensation:
Salary is commensurate with
experience (Low
$30,000s).
