The Iowa Campus Coalition is an initiative through Iowa Safe Schools which supports LGBTQ students through advocacy services, campus involvement, and statewide unity. Members of the Iowa Campus Coalition represent LGBTQ and allied students in Iowa community colleges, regent universities, and private institutions. These leaders are the voices and activists behind change, ensuring LGBTQ students receive safe and supportive environments.

As the governing body of the Coalition, the Leadership Board establishes the experiential understanding and voice of LGBTQ students to direct the endeavors of both Iowa Safe Schools and the Iowa Campus Coalition. For the 2017-2018 school year, the leadership board will be focused on launching this initiative and growing the Campus Coalition presence at each school. Meet the members of the 2017-2018 leadership board:

Navigating life through higher education can be a difficult task, made even more difficult for LGBTQ students who are disproportionately affected by issues they share with their heterosexual peers.  The Iowa Campus Coalition provides support for students, advocacy services for victims, readily available sexual health information, as well as many other services to meet the unique challenges of the queer higher education experience. Statistics show LGBTQ college students are significantly impacted by issues such as sexual health, sexual assault, and relationship violence:

  • Gay and bisexual men account for 67% of all new HIV diagnoses.
  • 64% of transgender persons experience sexual assault
  • LGBTQ students are 2 times more likely to endure sexual assault than their heterosexual peers
  • Only about 20% of LGBTQ young adults get tested for STIs
  • 43% of all LGBTQ college students have become victims of relationship violence.
  • 33% of relationship violence victims tell no one about their abuse.

Not only is the Iowa Campus Coalition focused on reducing these alarming statistics, but they also provide direction and action on collaboratively combating these issues and many others facing LGBTQ students. Working together, working smarter, and working harder, this is how the leaders of the Iowa Campus Coalition support LGBTQ students across Iowa. Are you ready for change?

Join us on February 7th, 2017 for the Student Day at the Capitol.  For the past 15 years, Iowa Safe Schools has worked in the Iowa Legislature to pass important legislation supporting LGBTQ students and fighting back against attacks to take away protections.  Thanks to the work of students in conjunction with Iowa Safe Schools staff, the Iowa Legislature passed our state’s anti-bully law and extended civil rights to include sexual orientation and gender identity.

On Tuesday, February 7th, 2017, students from across Iowa will have a chance to meet legislators including members of leadership in both the Iowa House and Iowa Senate.  Policy issues we will be discussing include banning the prehistoric practice of conversion therapy, bullying prevention legislation, and fighting to ensure LGBTQ individuals continue to be included in civil rights law.
