Celebrating 3 Years of Protecting Iowa's Youth |
|
Governor Culver Signs Safe Schools Law on March 5, 2007. Photo by the Office of Governor. All students deserve a safe and supportive place in which to learn, including those who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT), or are perceived to be. Studies here in Iowa and across the nation continue to show the constant rate of bullying and harassment faced by LGBT youth.
In order to stop bullies, the Iowa Safe Schools Law was signed into law on March 5, 2007. On September 1, 2007; the Iowa Safe Schools Law took effect. Every accredited school in Iowa had to begin implementing this law and protecting Iowa's youth on 17 categories including perceived or actual sexual orientation and gender identity.
In celebration of this anniversary and recognizing the work of three key figures to this law's success; a reception is being hosted to honor key allies and to benefit Iowa Safe Schools.
