Why was Iowa Safe Schools founded?

Iowa Safe Schools was founded to respond to the issues of bullying, harassment, and discrimination faced by Iowa's lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) student population.

Who funds Iowa Safe Schools?

Iowa Safe Schools is funded by individuals such as yourself.  Nearly 100% of funding received by Iowa Safe Schools is from educators, parents, counselors, youth-serving professionals, and others who just care about student safety in Iowa.  A smaller percentage of funding for Iowa Safe Schools comes from local corporations and foundations.  If you are interested in donating, click the link to your left or above.  

Does Iowa Safe Schools only focus on LGBTQ youth?

Iowa Safe Schools is concerned about the wellbeing of all Iowa students including those who are heterosexual.  Many individuals are unaware that anti-LGBTQ language is more often used against heterosexual students than LGBTQ students.  In one study, anti-LGBTQ language was used 7 out of 10 times against heterosexual students.

What kinds of issues does Iowa Safe Schools work on? 

Any issue that is currently impacting LGBTQ youth at a higher rate than heterosexual youth is a concern to Iowa Safe Schools.  These issues include bullying, harassment, homelessness, suicide risk, substance abuse, and sexually risky behaviors.  All of these issues are caused by hate, societal discrimination, and mean-spirited organizations.  In LGBTQ youth who do not face such hatred or misunderstanding - students succeeded at the same level as their heterosexual peers.
